From FGZ into the world

Founded in 1888 on the basis of a humanistic and Christian tradition, our school community welcomes every child as a unique personality.

Since its founding, the FGZ has distinguished itself through innovative innovations: it was the first Gymnasium in Zurich to offer co-education, preparatory classes for primary school students and a bilingual curriculum (German/English).

A strong community

Trust, care and respect – these are the foundations of the culture at Freies Gymnasium. Our community, shaped by living values and humanistic tradition, gives young people self-confidence and surefootedness for the future. This is where friendships are created for life. The students work closely together, learn to accept different points of view and develop joint solutions. The FGZ also cultivates close contacts with universities and partners from the worlds of society, culture and business.

Space for personality development

Our school accompanies young people during a formative stage in their lives, offering them plenty of space to develop into self-confident and committed people and broaden their range of experiences.

Our students learn by doing. Anyone who is allowed to make mistakes develops important skills and a sense of responsibility. Freies Gymnasium encourages students to go their own way and to be open and generous with others. We focus on individual strengths and thus promote students’ confidence in their own creativity.

Education as a responsibility for the future

We see school as a decisive contribution to shaping society, science, economy and culture – today and in the future.

At Freies Gymnasium, students forge their own educational path, developing motivation, curiosity and an inclination to investigate.

In doing so, they cultivate creative and critical thought, discover their strengths and tap into new interests. For us, education is more than preparation for studies and the world of work. Freies Gymnasium takes young people in a spirit of equality and encourages them to think independently, tolerate disagreement and find innovative solutions together.

Broad horizons

Thinking, feeling and acting in harmony – this is the basis for developing meaningfulness and sensitivity, for critical thinking and an understanding of one’s own and other cultures.

Our students approach life and society from a humanist perspective, create their images of the future and develop their own identities in the process.

Freies Gymnasium opens up broad horizons to take out into the world.
