Monolingual education programme

Our monolingual education programme caters to students in all levels at FGZ – from preparatory classes to the Matura. There is an emphasis on cultivating German as a first language, especially in the preparatory classes.

Freies Gymnasium Zürich offers a comprehensive monolingual course of study lasting six years and leading directly to the Matura. This approach enables early subject selection and intensive specialisation. The lessons cover a wide range of subject areas and are conducive to gaining in-depth knowledge.

In addition to the university entrance qualification, the aim is to impart fundamental knowledge with a view to lifelong learning, as well as to promote intelligence, willpower, sensitivity in ethical and musical matters, and physical abilities.

The Gymnasium attaches particular importance to the development of intellectual openness, independent judgement and personal maturity – qualities that are necessary for demanding university studies and responsible tasks in society.

What our pupils say

"In Gymnasium class 5, I particularly enjoyed the trip to Greece for the optional subject Greek and the trip to Rome with the core subject Latin. On both trips, the classes grew closer together and experienced unforgettable moments which go well beyond everyday school life."
