25 Years of Bilingual Education

To celebrate 25 years of pioneering bilingual education, Freies Gymnasium Zürich marked the day by bringing together students, alumni, staff, and parents to honour its enduring legacy and vibrant community.

The programme which was conceived to offer authentic bilingual education within the framework of a traditional Swiss Gymnasium in Zürich, began modestly in 2000–2001 with eight students. Today, it serves nearly one-third of the student body, offering an outstanding education from Progymnasium through Matura, and continues to attract more applicants each year than can be accommodated.

It was agreed that the celebrations would aim to unite current and former students, parents, and staff while expressing gratitude to many who contributed to the programme’s enduring success.

The festivities commenced with an opening ceremony in a filled Aula, led by Principal Dr Christoph Wittmer and students Emily and Sebastian. Throughout the day, a rich variety of activities took place, including talks, bake sales, karaoke and a tombola.

Distinguished alumni guest speakers included Dr Chiara Valli (Institute of Communication and Media Studies), historian and author Joseph de Weck, START Foundation Managing Director Max Keller, and ‘Peter’, a Swiss Air Force helicopter pilot. Their reflections on career paths, education, and global perspectives inspired thoughtful discussions among students and staff alike.

Bake sales organised by younger bilingual classes raised funds for Onwaba, a soup kitchen in East London, South Africa, while proceeds from the tombola and silent auction benefited both the school’s bursary fund and partner projects abroad. The lunchtime karaoke and the spirited quiz in the afternoon proved a great success, drawing enthusiastic participation and fostering a strong sense of community.

The celebrations concluded with an evening reception attended by parents, students, alumni, former colleagues, members of the school board and representatives from partner schools. Guests enjoyed international cuisine, musical performances by Lilly and Olivia, and speeches, given by Dr Christoph Wittmer, Doron Toggenburger, Matthew Cradock and Norah Mynn, who taught the first bilingual class, Stefan Urner, past principal of the Lakeside schools, and Martin Naville, past board member, honouring the pioneering spirit that shaped the bilingual programme.

As Norah Mynn reflected:

“The 25 Years of Bilingual Education at Freies Gymnasium celebrations provided the perfect opportunity for those involved over the years to get together again. The passion felt for the programme during the early years is still there today and there is no denying a certain pride in what has been achieved.”
